Gamification Design Portfolio

Current Project

I am currently working with ResNet, an Energy Company start-up. I am leading the gamification design of the platform they are developing. It is a highly gamified environment that the workers (oil field workers) will use throughout their entire work day.

Well Tender is a platform that the entire energy company can work, play, and live on. It will track the field workers and help them easily manage all aspects of their work, all while showing their personal performance and progress as they gain levels and achievements over time. It will also provide an arena for competition on a small scale between team members and at a large scale between teams or regions.  Well Tenders will have challenges that range from completing daily tasks efficiently and consistently to large scale campaigns involving the entire company and playing into the context at hand such as safety campaigns.

I am responsible for:

  • design of the level structure

  • managing how all content and actives feed into the overall progression throughout the platform

  • integrating core motivational drives into all areas of the platform to drive business objectives

  • taking all stakeholder ideas and compiling them into an organized format that the product manager can use to build out the designs

Westminster college

I teach Serious Games and Gamification of Learning, Online Learning/Instructional Design, and Learning Technologies in Westminster's Graduate School of Education. These classes are primarily in person with virtual components.

Gamification Course
-I focus on actionable and measurable gamification design, learning theories, and the synthesis that takes place to make a game-like experience that will achieve objectives and goals at hand.
-We study motivation, and why games have the power to motivate and help boost retention of material taught during the game.
-We look at Program Gamification, Product Gamification, Learning Games, Serious Games and Simulation.
-I built out the Gamification and Serious Games Course for Westminster from the ground up and am continuously revising and editing as new the field evolves.
-I mentor students through the gamification design process from beginning to end.

Learning Technologies and Instructional Design Courses
- In this courses we research and discuss emerging learning technologies and current industry trends. We study, learn, and design with industry standard software tools. We create content in multiple media formats, build Alternate Reality Games, and explore ethical considerations for technology.

HeyDayNow

HeyDayNow is a talent management software that uses gamification to motivate users. I worked with HeyDay to develop the level structure within the platform. The users move through content as well as meeting daily kpi’s in order to advance through the levels. Once the user reaches a certain level, they can begin to challenge other users to duel where they compete to see who will meet a stated kpi first. Other users can bet on these duels. The winners receive in-game currency that can be used at the company store.

This platform is extremely social with a good shot of friendly competition to help drive both user and company objectives.

I develop all my level and balance sheets with in google sheets or excel.

Blitz.GG

I helped Blitz to identify key metrics that needed to be measured within the platform in order to build engagement with their users. I also consulted on how to structure their coaching modules to include a variety of different content. There were maps to help the players understand the best pathways to objectives, guides on how to play each character, and combo charts and animations that would teach the players the best way to use their powers depending on the scenario at hand.

I also helped them go through their onboarding process to create a stronger and more enjoyable journey for their first time users.

Growth Engineering

I loved my work at Growth Engineering. I was able to wear multiple hats and work with a wide range clients.

Internally I managed our LMS, built content, organized learning events, and led trainings.

I worked with the product team to build out mini games for the Genie their gamified authoring tool. https://unleashthegenie.com/

I also worked with clients on the customer success side of the business. I would help them understand the gamification features on the platform and how their learning content and company initiatives would best realized on the Academy LMS.

IATA was company that I helped to design content for. Below is an animated video that I was a part of designing and project managing.

Games at work

I was asked to write an article for the Spring 2020 issue of The Westminster Review about gamification. You can view the article by clicking the button below.

Level up your learning - Thesis Study on Gamification in corporate training

The purpose of this project was to look at multiple learning theories and game design theories in order to determine if these two different sets of theories could be combined in order to create effective training materials. Also, I wanted to explore how this process would happen and to determine if the gamification of training materials is an effective and valid method of teaching. I came to this study from a constructivist background, and drew upon experiential learning theories. I blended them with the Flow theory, narrative learning theories and the Zone of Proximal Development theory to create a gamified training. I conducted my research at a local company, HireVue.
